Dental Fillings

When it comes to tooth fillings, composite fillings are an excellent option. Made from durable, tooth-colored plastics, composite fillings blend seamlessly with natural teeth, making them less noticeable compared to other filling types. These tooth-colored fillings can also be paired with sealants, allowing your child’s dentist to perform both procedures in a single visit and prevent further decay. The composite material's bonding capability to tooth structure adds another advantage, and in many cases, they can be repaired with additional composite material.

Crowns

Dental crowns restore dental function and aesthetics when a tooth is damaged by trauma or decay. Crowns can be used at any age, including during childhood. Pediatric dental crowns replicate the size, shape, and durability of natural teeth and can be made from metal for durability or tooth-colored composite for a natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child a candidate for a pediatric dental crown?

Pediatric crowns are typically used for two main reasons:

  • To preserve a severely damaged or decayed tooth that cannot support a filling.

  • As a preventive measure against future decay in children at high risk for cavities.

If you believe your child has a severely decayed tooth or is at risk for future decay, schedule a consultation with one of our pediatric dentists.

How should my child care for their crown?

While crowns protect the tooth surface from decay, proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent inflammation around the crown and caries on other teeth. Children with dental crowns should avoid chewing very sticky or hard foods, such as caramel candies or ice. Eventually, pediatric dental crowns will fall out with the primary tooth when permanent teeth come in.

Pulpotomies (Pulp Therapy for Baby Teeth)

The pulp is the tooth's inner core, containing blood vessels and nerves. Dental caries and trauma are primary reasons for pulp therapy in children.

Pulp therapy ensures the tooth is not lost, preserving primary teeth for chewing, speaking, and guiding permanent teeth. Without primary teeth, neighboring teeth can crowd in, causing permanent teeth to grow crooked. The two types of pulp therapy for children's teeth are vital pulp therapy (pulpotomy) and non-vital pulp therapy (pulpectomy).

Extractions

A dental extraction involves removing a tooth from the mouth. Common reasons for extraction include:

  • A baby tooth that doesn't exfoliate before the replacing adult tooth emerges.

  • A tooth that is unrestorable due to deep cavities or trauma.

  • A tooth needing extraction for orthodontic purposes.

Our dentists will ensure you understand why an extraction is recommended and explain the procedure in detail.
